Lieutenant Donald (Donn) Valentine Parent attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, and graduated in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. He received his commission from the Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island in June, 1962, and was assigned as Damage Control Assistant to the USS WHITFIELD COUNTY (LST 1169) homeported in Yokosuka, Japan. In 1963 LT PARENT was promoted to Engineer Officer and later served as Navigator. During his three year tour abroad WHITFIELD COUNTY LT PARENT operated continuously in the Western Pacific and took part in the initial build-up of United States forces in the Republic of Vietnam in 1965.
In September 1965 LT PARENT was released from active duty and was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company for nine months. He returned to active duty June, 1966, and served three months as First Lieutenant on the USS NEWMAN K. PERRY (DD 883) prior to entering the U. S. Naval Destroyer School in Newport, Rhode Island.
Upon completion of Destroyer School in March 1967, LT PARENT was assigned as Engineer Officer to USS CLAUD JONES (DE 1033), homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He served in this billet until February 1968, at which time LT PARENT became Executive Officer of CLAUD JONES. During his tenure on board CLAUD JONES LT PARENT has taken part in operations in the Middle and Western Pacific Ocean and has made one deployment to the Indian Ocean.
Lieutenant PARENT has been awarded the following medals: National Defense Service Medal, American Expeditionary Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal.
Lieutenant PARENT was born 30 November 1938 in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. He is married to the former Miss Fumiyo FUKAI of Yokahama, Japan.
