Destroyer Escort Day has been nationally set aside to be observed on the third Saturday in June, each year. Coy. Jeb Bush and his Cabinet signed a Resolution recognizing the third Saturday of June, each year, as Destroyer Escort Day in Florida. This Resolution was implemented on the 4th day of June in the year 2003.
Destroyer Escort Day will be observed at Fishermen’s Village in Punta Gorda, Florida, on 18 June 2005 at the Inner Court at 1100 hours. Our newly elected President, James E. Edmonson, who served aboard the USS Claud Jones DE-1033, extended an invitation to his former skipper, Capt. William C. Magee, USN (Ret.), to be the Keynote Speaker. William Cornell Magee was born in Brooklyn on 27 January 1925 and grew up in Ridgewood, NJ. He enlisted in the Navy in January 1943 and was assigned to several officer-training programs and commissioned Ensign in March 1945. Capt. Magee has a BA degree in Mathematics from the University of Richmond, in Richmond VA and a MS degree in Management from the U,S. Naval Postgraduate School Montery, CA. During his career he served aboard nine ships, six of USS Claud Jones DE-1033 was one of those ships. After retiring mariner business which he owned and operated in Annapolis,MD, VA on the Chesapeake Bay. John Cole, a former Chapter member from Port Charlotte, also served aboard the USS Claud Jones while it was under the command.
